“Let the truth be told-women do as a rule live through such humiliations, and regain their spirits, and again look about them with an interested eye” says Thomas Hardy one of his books which was first published in 1891. My point in stating this particular sentence from the book is the confusion I feel at its interpretation. Was this said to show the strength the women kind possess or simply stated to say whatever be done with women, they will be okay with it. Just because women know how to cope up with it (not all can), doesn’t mean they will be put in such a situation. The quote follows an unpleasant incident that happens with the female protagonists who is really put down by whisperings around her about what happened but still wants to be happy and is determined to be so. A girl who was wronged by a man due to her ignorance but still doesnt give in to the social norms and decides to stay independent. Though Hardy shows how strong the girl is, the inability of the girl to stop what happened leaves me morose. She deserved all good in the world but was thrown towards unknown by her own family. I wish people could stop projecting girls with plight. That is not all about us. Just accepting women are mentally strong is not enough, to pledge not to test her is just as important.
